The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has filed a Writ of Summons against the MP for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and broadcaster Abubakar Alhassan, popularly known as Blakk Rasta, over what he considers as false and defamatory statements made and published about him.
The writ, filed yesterday, seeks redress through the civil courts over the alleged defamatory statements.
In a statement, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah said he had deliberately chosen the civil litigation route rather than pursuing criminal prosecution over the publication of the “false information.”
He said the decision was part of his commitment to seeking accountability through democratic and constitutional processes.
“Unlike the Government, I have chosen the path of democratic accountability by seeking redress through the civil courts, rather than pursuing criminal prosecution for the publication of what I consider to be false information,” he said.
The Manhyia South MP also alleged that attempts by the government to intimidate and silence him over his involvement in a matter concerning a woman had failed.
According to him, he was pursuing justice for a mother of three minor children who was taken into custody by state security agents late on Saturday and remained in police custody.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah said his actions were aimed at securing the rights of the woman and her children, and insisted that he would not be deterred by efforts to silence him.
“That said, I wish to state unequivocally that the attempt by the Government to intimidate and silence me in my quest to fight for the rights of a poor mother of three (3) minor children, who was allegedly taken into custody by state security agents in the late hours of Saturday and remains in police custody, has failed,” he stated.
He further reaffirmed his intention to pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels.
“I remain committed to pursuing this matter through lawful and constitutional means and will not be deterred from seeking justice for her and her children,” he said.
