Marhaba FM Visits Centenarian

A centenarian, Hajiya Salamatu, otherwise called Hajiya Iyawo Kaabor, is a resident of New Fadama in Accra.

The management of her favourite radio station, Marhaba FM, a popular Hausa channel in Accra and surrounding areas, paid a courtesy call on the 110-year-old woman recently.

Led by the CEO of the Marhaba Media Company, owners of the radio station, Alhaji Baba Sheriff Abdullai and the entourage engaged the centenarian in a chat to learn more about her, who without doubt is one of the oldest women in the country.

Hajiya Iyawo Kaabor was born in Aburi, then part of the Eastern Province, and now Eastern Region.

A serene and leafy location, it boasts of a healthy weather on a mountain which overlooks the nation’s capital.

It hosts a botanical garden which was developed by the colonial authorities because of its unique vegetation.

Aburi has gone down in the history books of the Nigerian civil war as the place where during the quest for an end to the hostilities, former President of Nigeria Yakubu Gowon first met the secessionist leader of Biafra for talks.

She told her hosts that her father hailed from Katsina in the Northern part of Nigeria. He founded the Zongo community in the town, which today remains a component of the beautiful town which is inhabited by Hausa-descendants and other people with Northern extraction.

She is an elder sister to the late Alhaji Labaran, who happens to be among the few people who started broadcasting in the Hausa language more than 70 years ago in Ghana.

Hajiya Iyawo said that in her 110 years on earth, she came to the understanding that patience, endurance, peace, and strong family ties are the essence of life.

“I, therefore, call on the youth to have a forgiving heart and exercise patience in whatever they are doing. This will make them go a long way in life,” she added.
