Methodist Church Launches Health Fund

The clergy launching the Trust Fund

The Methodist Church Ghana, Sekondi Diocese, has successfully launched its Health Trust Fund to help meet the growing health needs of members.

The well-attended event took place at the Wesley Cathedral, Sekondi.

The Trust Fund, would provide financial assistance to members battling chronic diseases to demonstrate the church’s compassion and practical care for members of the church and even the community.

Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, noted that initiative will create a financial safety net to help protect vulnerable members and improve access to medical care within the diocese.

He said Christianity is about supporting the poor and the vulnerable, adding, “So the Lord laid it upon the heart of the Bishop of the Sekondi Diocese of the church to establish the Trust Fund.”

He said among the goals is to build a local healthcare support system for the church and community members.

Rev. Asamoah-Gyadu noted that anytime Jesus Christ wanted to praise people, He praised those who took care of the sick and the poor.

“So this initiative will also help to subsidise medical costs and treatment for people in need and to ensure health resilience across the diocese,” he added.

Rev. Asamoah-Gyadu indicated that it was not the first time such initiative is taking place in the Methodist Church. He said the church used to have what he termed as ‘The Poor Fund’, which was raised anytime members were being given Communion.

Rt. Rev. Emmanuel K. Ansah, Sekondi Diocesan Bishop, noted that the church was overwhelmed by medical conditions beyond its members’ ability to handle.

He said in just about a year, the church has appealed to members to raise over GH¢400,000 to help some members to undergo surgical operations for cancer, kidney transplant and bone issues among others.

“The church therefore saw the need to set up the Health Trust Fund that it can easily fall on when the need arises,” he added.

Dr. Justice Amoh, popularly known as ‘Justmoh’, Sekondi Diocesan Lay Chairman, noted that health remains the topmost priority of all.

He, thus, appealed to all Ghanaians and other philanthropists to support the fund, which is aimed at not only assisting members of the church but the community.
