Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has revealed the government’s plans to build new laboratories in several Senior High Schools (SHSs) to provide high school students with science and technology activities that will encourage them to pursue STEM careers.

STEM – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – will be where high-paying job will be, he said, adding that there is a need to get students into labs so they can perform hands-on activities in STEM vocations.

Speaking at the 60th anniversary launch of the Kumasi High School in Kumasi, the Minister announced a new effort to boost interest in math, engineering, technology, and science.

He stated that the well-known Gyinyase-based secondary school would benefit from the STEM laboratories and facilities provisions on campus.

According to him, this will enable the school to offer courses under the STEM concept, which would also afford parents who want their children to do purely STEM courses to choose Kumasi High School.

“The President’s vision is to encourage and provide avenues for more students to offer courses in STEM and as a measure more schools are being supported to do so.

“And as an old boy of Kumasi High School, I am glad that we are beneficiaries of this visionary project,” the Minister noted, and added that construction of the STEM project would begin early next month.

Prof. Adom Frimpong, Chairman of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), who is also a KUHIS old boy, said the school had matured to the point where it could provide every facility that will enhance teaching and learning.

As a result, he charged the old boys’ Associations to assist the school administration in providing the finest service possible to current students and tutors.

He declared that the celebration’s subject will be “60 Years of Holistic Education in a Safe Environment, What Next?” and praised the school’s academic achievements.

“We must have in ourselves the spirit of undertaking extra ordinary things if we are to enhance the status of this school in all the aspects of education”, the Chairman stressed.

Headmaster of Kumasi High School, Bernard Hall-Baidoo, expressed gratitude to the Old Boys Association for their continuous support.

He stated that the school had had accomplishments in academics, sports, and quiz competitions, among other things.

The school has chosen to build an ultra-modern sports complex, according to Reverend Peter Owusu Mensah, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the 60th Anniversary Celebration.

He noted that the project will serve as a fitting memorial to Kumasi High School’s 60-year history, and that the celebration would include a variety of activities including lectures, seminars, outreach, sports, and social events.

He stated that these programs will usher in the year 2024, which will be the school’s 60th anniversary.

“We are determined to undertake various activities in addition to the construction of the sporting monument to usher in the main anniversary in July 2024,” he stressed.
