Around 80% of young women in Ghana engage in unprotected sexual intercourse (raw sex), the Ghana Statistical Service’s (GSS) 2022 Demographic and Health Survey has revealed.
According to the report, this is despite their knowledge that condoms can help reduce their risk of contracting HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).
The GSS report disclosed that the women aged 15 to 24, and 79% are well aware that consistent condom use will benefit their overall health.
In August 2023, the Ghana AIDS Commission reported that women accounted for two-thirds of all new HIV infections in the country.
It further stated that out of the 16,574 new HIV infections that were reported in 2022, 10,927 cases involved females and 5,647 involved males.
Men ‘Cheaters’
Meanwhile, the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey indicated that two out of every 10 married men in the country have had an extra-marital frolicking.
It noted that 17.5% of married men had two or more partners, and 18.4% have had sexual relations with people who are not their wives or living with them.
The GSS report further indicated that 18.7% of divorced, separated, or widowed men in Ghana have two or more partners, and 69.9% have had sexual relations with people who are not their wives or living with them.
