Staff of MTN Ghana interacting with the pupils
Employees of MTN Ghana have donated school stationery, refreshments, and GH¢10,000 in cash to Street Academy as part of a new employee-led volunteerism initiative.
Speaking at the ceremony, General Manager, HR Operations and Analytics at MTN Ghana, Abdallah Ibrahim, said the initiative, which began this year, allows employees to contribute from what they have been blessed with to support orphanages and community causes.
“We call it employee-led volunteerism. This is the first one we are doing this year. Employees who celebrated their birthdays from January to May put forward donations to support Street Academy,” Mr. Ibrahim explained.
“We didn’t impose this on anyone. Every month we celebrate staff birthdays. This group chose Street Academy themselves, and we’re here to support them.”
Mr. Ibrahim noted that MTN staff were impressed by the work being done at the facility.
“We know they provide learning materials, lunch, and care for children from the community. We also saw that MTN built this facility, and the team has put it to good use. They’ve even added a health post with a nurse on duty and a doctor who comes twice a week,” he said.
In addition to the stationary and the GH¢10,000, the staff also donated refreshment for the pupils.
Mr. Ibrahim said the initiative is separate from MTN’s annual “21 Days of Y’ello Care” campaign, but shares the same spirit of volunteerism.
“This is very humbling. We always tell employees that one of the best ways to see the impact of your work is to come out here directly. We call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to support causes like this, because some of us are privileged and these children are not,” he stated.
He encouraged MTN staff across the country to dedicate at least one to three hours this month to volunteer activities. Similar donations are also taking place in Achimota and other MTN locations.
The school administrator applauded staffs of the telecommunication company for their support to the school.
