The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Binduri District, Upper East Region, is set to distribute relief items to over 200 farmers who lost their crops to last year’s floods.
The Binduri District was among the areas in the region that were hit by flooding as a result of continuous heavy downpour and the spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso last year.
The District Director of NADMO, Daniel Azimbe, said the relief items would include cutlasses, bags of maize and rice, cooking oil, used clothes as well as mosquito nets and coils.
According to him, some families who lost their loved ones to the floods would also receive some cash.
Mr. Azimbe blamed the delay in the distribution of the items on mobilization of the relief items and the conduct of the 2020 elections.
He, however, admitted that the relief items might not be enough for the affected farmers and expressed the hope that the little that would be distributed would bring some sense relief to the farmers.
“We have come out with a list for those who were affected by the floods. As you may know, the items do not come in bulk, so as an organization we are doing all that we can to at least release whatever we have received from the national level to the affected farmers. There is no monetary support for the farmers.”
According to him, the only financial support will go to families that lost their relations to the floods.
“We have not received money from the government or any organization to be given to farmers who lost their crops. The only money we received is for those who lost their lives to the floods and their names have been written on it.”
However, some farmers who spoke with the DAILY GUIDE said they were looking forward to receiving financial support from the government to enable them to get back to farming as the season approached.
