President Akufo-Addo with the trophy while David Trezequet applauds him
PRESIDENT AKUFO-Addo has stated that Ghana will be the first African country to lift the FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, when David Trezeguet, a FIFA legend, who won the FIFA World Cup in 1998, accompanied the trophy on a two-day display in Ghana, she said, “I am of the firm conviction that Ghana will not only participate in the competition but will make the whole nation and by extension, the African continent proud, with a great performance.”
He urged Ghanaians to throng to the Accra Polo Court to view the trophy to be part of history, before the Stars finally bring the cup home on December 18.
He added, “We, who were the first to gain our freedom and independence from colonial rule, will be the first to bring the World Cup to Africa.”
The Black Stars will begin its first match against Portugal on November 24, 2022, at Stadium 974 in Doha.
Four days on, the Stars will face South Korea at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.
Ghana wraps up its group stage adventure with Uruguay at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah.
He expressed the belief that the Black Stars will defeat Uruguay this time in Qatar.
He pointed out that, “We have also had to wait for twelve (12) years to get revenge against Uruguay, and we assure them that, this time, the hand of Suarez will not save them against the Black Stars of Ghana. They are going down!”
The trophy was displayed to the public yesterday.
