Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
A treacherous plot by some high-ranking officials of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to smear newly elected NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with fake religious and tribal quotes on social media has been uncovered.
A source close to the clandestine move has revealed to the DAILY GUIDE that several meetings have been held with some top NDC officials in connection with the dirty plan, which he said is intended to sow a seed of discord between Christians and Muslims.
The source hinted that besides religious bigotry, the NDC intends pitching ethnic groups against each other in their bid to throw spanners into the political project of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.
“Credible research and detailed political analyses show that Dr. Bawumia’s election as flagbearer of the NPP, poses a real threat to the NDC’s chances of winning the 2024 elections. This we admit privately amongst ourselves,” the source, which craved anonymity, told DAILY GUIDE.
It is because of this real threat that the plan was hatched to discredit Dr. Bawumia with fake religious and tribal quotes attributed to him and other national party executives to upset Christian groups and some tribal groups in the country, DAILY GUIDE has learnt.
The plan, according to the source, is to design and attribute fake anti-Christian, pro-Muslim and divisive tribal quotes to Dr. Bawumia, and other high-ranking NPP officials for daily circulation on various social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, in an attempt set up Dr. Bawumia against Christians and some tribes.
“The plan is to distribute such designed quotes widely on social media on daily basis to the wider reach of particularly, Christians, who will be upset with Bawumia when they see such quotes,” the source revealed.
On the Muslim and Zongo front, the NDC source revealed that the plot is to launch sustained attacks in the Zongos against Bawumia, by portraying him as a Muslim, who also dines and wines with Christians – a strategy the NDC believes will upset the Zongo folks against Bawumia.
In addition to this, the secret meeting also decided to intensify, in the Zongos, the NDC’s strategy of deliberately portraying Dr. Bawumia as a liar, and also blame Dr. Bawumia for not stopping the government from increasing Hajj fares, even though the increment was global, as a result of Saudi Arabia raising cost of Hajj services.
On the Zongo front, the source revealed that the party is to deploy officials of the Zongo Caucus for the smear campaign, as well as engage some young Islamic clerics with social media followers to attack Dr. Bawumia for his engagements with the Christian community.
Already, the diabolical plan is being executed, as this week witnessed many of such fake anti-Christian and tribal quotes deliberately attributed to Dr. Bawumia, and other top Muslim NPP officials, such as Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser and Aziz Haruna Futa, National Nasara Coordinator.
Following Sam George’s religious attacks on Dr. Bawumia, the attacks against the Vice President have intensified this week, with several manufactured, fake anti-Christian and tribal quotes being attributed to Dr. Bawumia, and shared on social media by known NDC activists.
On Monday, one of such fake quotes was attributed to the NPP National Youth Organiser, but he issued a public disclaimer as he was live on Peace FM when the fake quotes popped up on social media.
National Peace Council
Following Sam George’s widely condemned religious outbursts against Dr. Bawumia and the escalation of discussions on it and the fake quotes, the National Peace Council has expressed concern about the situation, with a statement cautioning against religious politics.
