Former President Jerry John Rawlings has stated that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) let its former Chairman, Dr. Kwabena Adjei, down when he was alive.

He said some people in the party ‘monetized’ the party’s systems and hijacked it for their selfish gain to the chagrin of the late chairman.

“Adjei was disappointed in terms of our own weaknesses as a party. He was disappointed about the politics of our party and the fact that it had been monetized and held hostage. “He was hurt about the loss of the value systems of the party.”

The former President, who disclosed this when he called on the family of the departed former National NDC chairman at his Agbogba residence in Accra on Monday, described him as non-materialistic person who stood for his beliefs.

According to him, Dr Adjei was worried by happenings in the NDC even though he never mentioned any.

Consoling the bereaved family, Mr. Rawlings encouraged them to stay put in these difficult times.

He also inspired children of the former party chairman to endeavour to uphold the ideals and fighting spirit of their father.

Dr Kwabena Adjei served in several capacities during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and NDC administrations before becoming national chairman of the party from 2005 to 2014.

A friend of Dr. Adjei, Dr. Anthony Dzegede, also described the former NDC chairman as a great thinker and philosopher whose recourse to politics was innate.

He said Dr Adjei was a genius with brilliant ideas, witty and full of humorous insinuations.
