NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC Congress (NDC) presidential contender, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, has begun winning endorsement of influential members and delegates of the party after declaring his bid to contest the party’s flagbearership race.
The former Finance Minister, under the Mills administration, officially launched his campaign to become the NDC’s presidential candidate and run for president in 2024, promising “the dawn of a new era.”
He will likely compete with ex-President John Dramani Mahama, for the crucial NDC race scheduled for early next year by the party.
DAILY GUIDE has gathered from the corridors of the opposition party that Dr. Duffuor has been receiving calls from scores of NDC members throwing their weight behind him.
According to sources, many of the callers and visitors to Dr. Duffuor’s office have pledged their unflinching support to him and declared their readiness to work to get him elected as flagbearer.
Some of them purportedly stated that they believe in the competence of the former Finance Minister to wrest power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and bring back the economy on a sound footing.
While wishing him well, the NDC members reportedly hammered on the tramp card of Dr. Duffuor as a new face with fresh ideas, with international and local connections.
Dr. Duffuor, who is also a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, is seen to have taken command of the NDC presidential race with his Ahotor project, with the ability to generate the turnout needed to defeat the presidential candidate of the ruling party.
He seems well poised to make the flagbearer race a dead heat for former President Mahama, after casting himself as a champion of the poor in the party.
His new “project” has already sent tongues wagging, with suggestions that he appears better suited to hold the flag of the NDC in the 2024 general election, by rolling on the back on his achievement under the Mills administration.
One NDC official, who was part of a team of party members who visited Dr. Duffuor recently to pledge their support, indicated that the tenure of the former Finance Minister “witnessed a massive establishment of companies, including financial institutions, and employment opportunities.”
“As the former Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Duffuor assembled what is arguably the best Economic Team ever in Ghana. It was made up of young, world-class professionals, who came home to work,” the NDC official, who pleaded for anonymity, asserted.
“There is no doubt in our mind that if given the opportunity to become Ghana’s President in 2024, Dr. Duffuor will bring to bear his experiences in governance and economics to take Ghana out of its present economic crisis under the Akufo-Addo and NPP government,” they assured.
