The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched its women’s manifesto in Kumasi, Ashanti Regional capital outlining a comprehensive plan to promote gender equality and empower women in Ghana.
This marks the fourth time the NDC has launched it manifesto with this focusing on women, demonstrating the party’s commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by women.
At the launch, Presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama pledged to introduce two key bills: the Property Rights of Spouses Bill and the Domestic Workers Bill.
These bills aim to protect women’s rights and prevent exploitation.
The Property Rights of Spouses Bill seeks to ensure that women have equal ownership and control over marital properties, preventing men from unilaterally evicting them.
This move is expected to provide financial security and independence for women.
The Domestic Workers Bill, on the other hand, aims to safeguard vulnerable domestic workers, predominantly women, from mistreatment and exploitation.
Mahama emphasized that this law will hold perpetrators accountable and provide protection to those affected.
John Mahama also vowed to increase women’s representation in Parliament, district assemblies, and other leadership roles.
He recognized that gender equality in leadership is crucial for harnessing Ghana’s full potential.
The NDC’s women’s manifesto is built on the party’s previous commitments to gender equality..
In 2016, the NDC launched its first women’s manifesto, followed by subsequent editions in 2020 and 2023.
This latest addition reinforces the party’s dedication to addressing women’s empowerment and equality.
