Sylvester Mensah
Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance (NHIS), who is vying for flagbearership position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sylvester Mensah, says the mood of the party members at various gatherings clearly indicates that they are yearning for a new leader who would do things differently.
“The mood on the ground portrays clearly that the NDC is craving for something new. The NDC, as a party, believes that we must move away from things that have not been useful to us. We have to learn from things that have not helped us. The whole thing is that we need new ideas, new face, new vision, new direction, and set of leadership, and this is what I represent.”
He expressed optimism in winning the party’s flagbearership race.
Mr Mensah disclosed this while speaking to delegates of the NDC in Bolgatanga as part of his campaign in the Upper East Region ahead of the December 7 primaries of the party.
The shy politician said he was happy with the endorsement by delegates across the country, calling on them to vote for him come December 7.
The aspirant stressed that he would continue to support whoever emerges as winner.
Asked about the status of the NHIS, Mr. Mensah said “I have tried to stay away from commenting on issues relating to the NHIS, because I am the immediate-past CEO, so I would want to allow current regime to take the health Insurance to the level we envisaged; this is when we can make comparison. I will be glad to talk about the Health Insurance at the end of their tenure, so we can access their performance.”
He said the Scheme was doing well under him, adding “the major difficulty has been funding. Inadequate funding to meet the growing expectation and the growing financial obligation of the Scheme basically has not been addressed by the current regime, and it is getting worse.”
