Minister for Aviation, Cecilia Dapaah, has disclosed that government will construct an ultramodern airport at Princess Town in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.

She indicated that the processes for the acquisition of an 8,000-acre land for the construction of the new airport were ongoing.

The airport, according to the minister, would help create an enabling environment for business activities and tourism in the region.

She said government intends to open up the country to both local and foreign businesses and investors through the construction of the airport.

The Minister made the comments during a day’s tour of the region to inspect the proposed site for the new airport.

Speaking to journalists, Ms Dapaah said an assessment was underway for the construction of the project.

She revealed that the technical men from the Ministry of Aviation had already visited the proposed site for the project to conduct an assessment for the construction of the new airport.

“We now have to go to the drawing board to critically assess the project, which would soon take off to facilitate easy movement across the country to the region for business activities and tourist attractions,” she added.

She pointed out that the project was a Public, Private Partnership (PPP) and Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) initiative.

The Aviation Minister later paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Princess Town, Nana Kofi Nyame, who lauded the initiative and promised to collaborate with government to ensure the success of the project.

He, however, appealed to the government to rehabilitate the road from the community to the proposed site, which is currently in a deplorable condition.

From Princess Town, the Aviation Minister visited Axim in the Nzema East Municipality where she inspected the proposed site for the construction of an airstrip for the Axim community.

Ms Dapaah, who was accompanied by the Minister of Tourism and Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Catherine Abelema Afeku, assured the chiefs and people of the area that an airstrip would be constructed either at Beamish Park or Victoria Park, all in Axim.

Nana Awiafom, Gyantuahene of Lower Axim Traditional Area, praised the government for the swift manner in which it was carrying out some projects in some parts of the country.
