The new Regent of Nsuaem Divisional Council
The newly appointed Regent of Nsuaem Divisional Council in the Western Region, Nana Asaa Kofi III, has called on the chiefs and people in the area to remain committed to peace, unity and cooperation, as he pledges to ensure the development of the divisional area.
Speaking to the media shortly after his official introduction at the Divisional Council meeting at Nsuaem, the Regent indicated that collective effort is essential to drive progress and improve the lives of the residents.
He said he will spearhead the formation of an Advisory Board which will comprise people with different backgrounds to advise the Council on issues relating to their field.
“We have lots of intellectuals within the divisional area, including accountants, lawyers, doctors and police among others.
“We will bring all of them together, so that if we have legal issues we can have a lawyer to advise us and so on.
“We cannot procrastinate any longer. We want everyone to share his or her ideas as to how we can fast-track the development of the Nsuaem Divisional Area,” he added.
The Chief of Essaman in the Divisional Area, Nana Kuranchie Panyin III, said the area has not had a leader for sometime now as a result of some chieftaincy issues at Nsuaem.
He said, “The former regent has also travelled outside the country for long, and so we needed someone to fill the gap, hence, our decision to appoint a new regent.”
He noted that, according to their customary law, the sub-chiefs in the area are supposed to give a share of the money from the sale of lands in their respective areas to the Divisional Council for development projects.
“But because we did not have a leader at the Divisional Council, that money was being kept by the sub-chiefs,” he disclosed.
He also mentioned that school children in the area were not benefiting from a scholarship scheme by the Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL), which is operating on their land, because the area did not have a leader.
“Now that we have a new Regent, we the sub-chiefs will do all we can to support him to develop the divisional area,” he noted.
Nana Kuranchie Panyin III expressed dismay that a senior high school that was constructed by the former Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, George Mireku Duker, was still not in use.
“Now we have a new leader who can lead us to the appropriate quarters to ensure our secondary school is opened to admit our own children,” he stressed.
Madam Eugenia Gifty Kusi, a former MP for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, also urged the chiefs to support the new Regent to ensure that the new senior high school built by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, is opened.
