Accra New Town emerged tops in the African Games Zongo Football Competition at the Madina Astro Turf over the weekend.

They trounced Nima 4-0 in the final to clinch the ultimate in the well-organised competition.

Skipper of the side, Bernard Cofie, struck three times with Mubarak Yahaya adding the other goal.

Mubarak swept home a screamer from 30 yards to stun the Nima defence men who were caught unaware.

Cofie profited from a defensive error as he powered a half volley past the stranded Nima goalkeeper.

Cofie registered the third goal for Nima when he dived to connect the ball home for the third goal.

They received a trophy and cash of GH¢10,000 for their efforts, while the runners-up took GH¢8,000.

Mamobi, who placed third, went home with GH¢6,000.

Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 13th African Games, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, expressed thanks to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the support towards organising the event. He also hailed the winners, all participants, the media, security, medics and the fans.

He said this is the beginning of programmes to sensitise Ghanaians on the upcoming African Games, and hoped the people of Ghana will contribute positively to the success of the Games.

Eight Zongo communities took part in the exciting competition.
