Samuel Udoetuk Wills, the 28-year-old Nigerian suspected kidnapper who escaped from police cells in Takoradi, has revealed how he outwitted the police in his caution statement.

The suspect escaped from the custody of the Takoradi Police on December 30, 2018 and was re-arrested in an uncompleted building located between Kansaworodo and Nkroful in Sekondi-Takoradi at about 1:00am on Friday, January 4, 2019.

The Magistrate Court on January 9, 2019 charged him with three counts of escaping from lawful custody, causing unlawful damage and resisting arrest.

He pleaded not guilty to all the three charges and the court presided over by Michael Ampadu, remanded him in prison custody.

At yesterday’s sitting, the case investigator, Detective Inspector Austin Adjei read the caution statement of the suspect, revealing how the 28-year-old suspected kidnapper escaped.

Per the statement, the suspect’s friend identified only as Kwesi visited him at the police charge office on December 26, 2018 after his arrest.

The suspect indicated in his caution statement that Kwesi went to the police station again on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at about 4pm.

He noted that the friend went behind the cells and threw two small hacksaw blades through the window to help him cut the iron rods put there to ensure ventilation.

According to the suspect, Kwesi also gave him oil to apply to the iron rods to douse the noise while cutting so that the police would not hear any sound.

The suspect indicated that he used the blades to cut the iron rods on Sunday, December 30, 2018 and escaped from the cells few minutes after 6pm.

The suspect confirmed to the court that that was his statement to the police but indicated he had something else to say.

The court however told him that he would be allowed to speak at the next adjourned date on January 28, 2019.

The presiding judge, Michael Ampadu, advised parents whose children or relatives had been kidnapped, and were in court in their numbers, to have patience with the investigators since the substantive case of kidnapping had not begun.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the suspect, in an attempt to escape again after the re-arrest, head-butted one of the policemen but was finally overpowered.

DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), described the recapturing of the suspect as good news.

She was hopeful the suspect, who is believed to belong to a syndicate kidnapping young women in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, would cooperate with police to locate and free the rest of the victims.

Prior to the recapture of the suspect, seven police personnel, who were on duty at the Takoradi Central Police Station at the time the Nigerian suspected kidnapper escaped, were given 10 days to produce the alleged kidnapper or face the full rigours of the law.
