SOME NIGERIANS have reportedly carried out attacks on officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Kasoa.
In a video circulating on social media, the Nigerians are seen blocking a GIS vehicle registered GI220 with woods and bricks.
Unconfirmed reports claimed the Immigration Officers had gone there to check the residence permit of the Nigerians staying in the town.
The Spokesperson of the Ghana Immigration Service, Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, who confirmed the incident to the media, said “they (the officers) were going on normal operation to check on foreign nationals who don’t have legal stay and they met these Nigerians who were trying to resist.”
It is not the first time Ghana Immigration Officers are having issues with Nigerians. In November 2018, some armed policemen and Immigration officers had a confrontation at Sakaman Junction in Accra following a misunderstanding over the custody of four Nigerians the Immigration officers had arrested for alleged immigration offences.
The policemen from the Odorkor District had reportedly attacked and bullied the four Immigration officers to release the suspects.
The four suspects were arrested at McCarthy Hill on suspicion of residing in Ghana illegally and allegedly engaging in criminal activities, including cyber fraud.
There were seven suspects at the time but three of them managed to escape arrest in an operation led by Supt Elijah Narh of the Ghana Immigration Service.
