Nkrumah’s Son, Gamal, Passes On

The late Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah

The Nkrumah family has announced the passing of Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Named after former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, a friend of his father Kwame Nkrumah, the deceased was a respected journalist, writer and intellectual.

Gamal passed away in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, following a prolonged illness. He had been receiving care at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke.

Throughout his life, Gamal remained deeply committed to the ideals of justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity. As a journalist and commentator, he dedicated his voice and intellect to examining the political, social and cultural forces shaping Africa and the wider world.

A man of profound intellectual curiosity, independence of thought and quiet conviction, Gamal carried forward, in his own distinctive way, the enduring legacy of his father, while building a life and reputation firmly grounded in his own principles and achievements.

The Nkrumah family remembers Gamal with immense love, gratitude and pride. His wisdom, kindness and devotion to the values he held dear will remain an enduring source of inspiration, the family noted in a statement.

At this time of sorrow, the family expresses its heartfelt appreciation to all those who stood with Gamal throughout his illness, particularly the medical professionals and caregivers in Cairo who provided him with care and dignity. “Our deepest thanks also go to the governments and people of his two countries, Egypt and Ghana, for their generous support,” the family stated.

Details concerning memorial arrangements and opportunities to pay tribute to his life and legacy will be communicated in due course.

The deceased was the first son of Kwame Nkrumah’s Egyptian wife, Madam Fathia.
