No Gay Cash For National Cathedral

The Secretariat of the National Cathedral has dispelled media reports that a supposed gay community is helping to finance the construction of the National Cathedral.

A news release, issued in Accra and signed by Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, said: “The Secretariat of the National Cathedral wishes to state unequivocally that this news item is false.”

“The attention of the Secretariat of the National Cathedral has been drawn to a news item making rounds on some social media outlets about the donation of $25 million from the gay community in Ghana for the National Cathedral,” the statement said.

It said: “The secretariat has not received any such donation from the so-called Gay Community. This news item, which does not provide date or the recipient of the said donation, is a concoction of the fictitious author.”

According to the statement, “President Akufo-Addo, who launched the fundraising campaign for the National Cathedral, called for what is called a coalition of the willing that will arise and build the cathedral to the glory of God.”

“This coalition does not have room for interests, groups and individuals whose motivation to give the cathedral will be to draw attention to themselves and their issues,” it added.

The statement said: “The coalition will be united only in their support of the President’s vision of the National Cathedral, as a gesture of thanksgiving and sacred national infrastructure.”

It urged the public to “disregard this false publication and treat it with the contempt it deserves.”
