Davido
Nigerian Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has thrown down the gauntlet to his fellow artistes, insisting that none of them has a catalogue of hit songs bigger than his.
The singer made the bold claim during a recent livestream with streamer Davrel, where he challenged any Nigerian artiste confident enough to compete with him in a hit-for-hit contest.
Davido said he was willing to put $1 million on the line to prove his dominance.
“I will put $1 million cash on the table. Nobody has more hits than me,” he declared.
The statement has reignited the long-running debate among Nigerian music fans over which artiste has the strongest catalogue of hit songs.
Davido is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most successful Afrobeats artistes, with a career spanning more than a decade and numerous commercially successful songs and collaborations.
His major contemporaries include Wizkid, Burna Boy, Olamide, Tekno and Runtown, all of whom have built impressive catalogues of their own.
Davido’s challenge comes several years after Burna Boy issued a similar call during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
At the time, former Mavin Records artiste, Reekado Banks accepted Burna Boy’s challenge, but the Grammy-winning singer rejected the proposed contest, saying Reekado Banks was not a “worthy challenger.”
As of the time of filing this report, no Nigerian artiste had publicly accepted Davido’s latest challenge.
The proposed hit battle, should it happen, would likely attract significant attention from fans and reignite comparisons between some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
