Hassan Tampuli – CEO of NPA (L)
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority(NPA) , Hassan Tampuli, has revealed that in 2018, Ghana consumed 288,328,785 kilograms of LPG of which statistics show that the Northern region accounted for two percent of the total national consumption of LPG.
According to him, statistics show that there was more room for LPG usage in the Northern region.
He believed more consumption of LPG will significantly protect our vegetative cover.
He indicated that the introduction of LPG as fuel for domestic use was meant to curb rapid deforestation arising from reliance on wood fuel which is fast depleting the national forest cover.
The Northern region is known for its high usage of charcoal in domestic homes than LPG.
Addressing participants at a stakeholders engagement on the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) in Tamale, he said the implementation model for the National LPG Policy, was aimed at providing direction for marketing and distribution of LPG in a safe and efficient manner, to facilitate an increase in access to LPG nationwide.
“This will help achieve the policy goal which is to ensure that at least 50% of Ghanaians have access to safe, clean and environmentally friendly LPG for domestic, commercial and industrial usage by 2030,” he said.
Mr. Tampuli noted that the policy implementers were developing a market-driven structure to ensure safety and increase access of LPG to 50 percent by 2030 as mentioned earlier.
“It is also to ensure the existence of robust and standard Health, Safety and Environmental practices in the production, marketing and consumption of LPG,” he said
Job Creation
Mr. Hassan Tampuli disclosed that direct job creation is estimated to be over 4,500 in relation to new jobs under the actors of the new value chain and door to door delivery service.
He assured that the new policy will not affect current jobs of LPG Bulk Transporters, LPG Bulk Distribution Companies, and LPG Bulk Storage companies.
The NPA CEO stated that the relevant licenses will be issued and safety protocols will be keenly observed to ensure the safety of the good people of Ghana, while increasing access to LPG for domestic, commercial and industrial use from the current 25 percent level to 50 percent by 2030.
