Not As They Wished (2)

John Mahama

Our elders say “if wishes were horses, beggars would ride,” and that is why the wishful thinking of the naysayers never materialised during the just ended festive season. Notwithstanding the negative expectations at the last Xmas, the 2023 festivities were arguably some of the best celebrated.

For the NDC, they think the opportunity for them to wrest power from the governing NPP is now and are tickling themselves and laughing. So already they have started celebrating the visit of Cheddar to former President Mahama. But we wonder whether Cheddar is any force to reckon with, especially when he announced his emergence on the political scene in a hood. What does he represent in a hood? We are excited about this year’s electioneering because it is not going to be based on Goebbelsian lies but figures backed by concrete data. Again, we want to ask about the role of Dele Momodu in our local politics.

We serve notice to go after him if he does not steer clear of Ghanaian politics. This year’s election is not about wishes but issues that would inspire hope in the electorate. The real “showdown” awaits us all during the run up to December 7, 2024.

The Afua Asantewaa show and the public’s rally was reminiscent of our school days when the girls sang to boost the morale of sports teams during games. That was why one of the major rendition was “We are going, Heaven knows where we are going…” just to spur her on to greater heights.

Now many people are bent on doing all kinds of marathons to break the Guinness Book of Records. Then just about ten days ago, some piece of news was that wee smokers want to organise “wee-a-thon” to market the prohibited drug because to them “a-thon” means “ton” in Akan, so they will organise the event to market marijuana. Whatever people want to do to win global laurels, one thing is clear by Afua Asantewaa’s efforts.

Any goal is attainable but only through hard work and determination. Ghana is not broken after all as the naysayers want us to believe. At worst our circumstances is bent but not broken and with unity of purpose, Ghana will turn the corner sooner than later.

Already the signs are that the managers of the economy are finding the right antidotes and with the support of well-meaning people our difficulties would be history soon.

We are told soon, John Mahama will launch Mahama-a-thon to market his bid to be president again. And if he does, he is likely to be aided by volunteers who want to come up with campaigns such as “Ford Expedition-a-thon”, “Bus branding-a-thon”, “Airbus-a-thon”, and “Dumsor-a-thon” among others to make it easier for Mahama to reach out to the electorate.

Be that as it may, 2024 would be an exciting and eventful year. Afua has set the tone for interesting and good things to happen to Ghana.

We shall not allow those preaching gloom and doom to have their way. Ghana can only hope for greater heights, and that is why those who once messed up would not have another chance to inflict the pain of incompetence on us. That is why Failatu has also accepted the challenge to break the Guinness World Record on cooking in Tamale. We can only have moving forward together-a-thon and not those who would disregard our forward march.
