In a closely contested race, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei emerged as the winner of the Okaikwei North parliamentary primary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The primary, held on today, saw a total of 850 delegates casting their votes.
With a total of 341 votes, Nana Ama Dokua secured her victory over five other aspirants who were vying to become the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei North.
The competitors included Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, who managed to gather 27 votes, and Prince Owusu Mensah, who received six votes. Akoto Alberta Afia Asomaniwa, on the other hand, was a strong contender with 228 votes, while Nyarko Stephen Adipa garnered 108 votes.
Additionally, Fuseini Issah, the former Member of Parliament for the area, obtained 114 votes.
Although the primary was largely conducted smoothly, there was a moment of confusion when unidentified delegates attempted to cast their votes in Okaikwei North. Claims were made that these individuals were not actual residents of the constituency. However, some alert delegates noticed their presence and raised the alarm, leading to a heated altercation. Thankfully, the situation was quickly diffused by the intervention of the police.
Nana Ama Dokua’s victory in the Okaikwei North parliamentary primary positions her as the NPP’s candidate for the constituency in the upcoming general elections. With her experience as the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, she is seen as a strong contender to secure the seat for the party. As the campaign season approaches, all eyes will be on Nana Ama Dokua and her competitors as they vie for the ultimate victory in the Okaikwei North constituency.
