One Busted In Sukura Cops Shooting

The Mamprobi Police have apprehended one of the suspected armed robbers who allegedly shot four police officers from the Operations Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command last Saturday evening.

According to the police, the wounded cops, identified as Sergeant Charles Dankwah (leader of the deployed officers), Constable Gbedema Rudorf, Corporal Gbemu Thomas and Corporal Nyamekye, were responding to a distress call when the incident occurred.

Three of the victims namely Constable Gbedema, Corporal Gbemu, and Corporal Nyamekye, who received gunshot wounds  on shoulders, thighs and in the hands, were discharged a day after the incident at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

According to the police, Sergeant Dankwah, the first to be shot in the chest, is still on admission at the hospital.

Confirming the arrest of the suspect (whose name has been withheld by the police) to DAILY GUIDE, the Accra Regional Police Commander and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), George Alex Mensah, said the suspect was nabbed by the Mamprobi Police through police intelligence.

He narrated: “We had information that one of the suspects involved in the Dansoman shooting incident, which resulted in the injury of the four police personnel, was still hiding at Sukura; hence a team of police personnel was dispatched to the area.”

He disclosed that the team led by the district commander, DSP George Asare, proceeded to the hideout of the suspect and apprehended him.

He is currently in the custody of the Accra Regional Police Command assisting in investigations.

Meanwhile, he noted that efforts were being made to apprehend the accomplices of the suspect.

DCOP George Alex Mensah, in an earlier briefing after the incident, narrated to DAILY GUIDE that the incident occurred around 11pm on Saturday.

He said the regional command received a distress call of a robbery attack at Zamrama line around 8pm and the police officers were dispatched to the scene. On their way, the men missed the direction and had to stop at an area near Sukura for direction.

Unknown to the personnel, the armed robbers were hiding in the area where they had stopped.

Immediately they alighted, the armed robbers, who were hiding in a wooden structure, opened fire on them. In the process, four men were wounded with the exception of the driver who was in the vehicle.

The driver sped off and called for reinforcement. Later, the wounded police personnel were conveyed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Two others, a 24-year-old man identified as Ebenezer Danso, aka Nana Yaw, and an elderly woman, also sustained injuries.

Mr Danso was hit by a bullet while the elderly woman, who was outside her room, had a fractured leg when she decided to run into her room.
