Organised Labour Declares Strike Over Galamsey

The Organised Labour has declared a nationwide strike, set to begin on October 10, 2024, in protest of the government’s inaction on illegal small-scale mining, also known as “galamsey.”

This decision comes after the expiration of a September 30 deadline for President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency over the issue.

Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), stated, “Following the expiration of our deadline, and the failure of government to meet our demands on illegal mining, Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike.”

The TUC Boss, Ansah emphasized that workers should stay home until the government meets their demands.

Background on Galamsey Menace

The galamsey menace has plagued Ghana for years, causing environmental degradation, water pollution, and loss of lives.

Previous efforts to combat illegal mining have yielded little success.
