Members of the Oti Region Campaign Team
The Chairman of the Joint Consultative Committee for the Oti Movement, Krachiwura, Nana Mprah Besemuna III, has cautioned those opposing the creation of the Oti Region to test the law of the land in court and stop making conjectures.
According to him, “Some people have turned themselves into constitutional lawyers to claim that laid-down procedures have not been followed in the creation of the region.
He said “those making such uninformed claims should tell what the constitutional procedures are not being followed and stop inflaming passion and misguiding the public and good people of the region.”
Nana Mprah Besemuna debunked the assertion that the demand for the creation of a Oti Region from the Volta Region was motivated by tribal and ethnic considerations.
He said suggestions of tribal or ethnic agenda behind the demand for the region were misplaced because the Oti Enclave is the most ethnically diverse area in the country.
“We have Guans, Akans, Konkombas, Kotokolis, Ewes, Bassares and many more tribes,” he added.
Nana Besemuna disclosed this while addressing the chiefs and people in the proposed region at the launch of Oti Referendum Campaign Committee at Kadjebi.
He said the Oti Enclave has contributed immensely to the growth of the nation’s economy through the production of food crops, cattle, cocoa, coffee and timber but suffered serious deprivation due to inequitable distribution of resources.
Nana Besemuna III urged the people of the Volta North not to be distracted because the constitution was on their side and focus and channel their energies towards pursuing “the agenda till the region is created.”
He assured Ghanaians that detractors cannot stop them since they are committed to the cause.
The nine-member Oti Referendum Campaign Team has been mandated to ensure the area gets a 100 percent votes in the December 27, 2018 referendum for the creation of the Oti Region.
All Municipal and District Chief Executives and Members of Parliament in the Oti Enclave are also to complement the work of the committee to ensure Oti Region becomes a reality.
Oti Will Bring Development
Nana Mprah Besemuna III disclosed that the creation of a new region would deepen decentralization to ensure that more resources are committed to accelerate development, create jobs and coordinate the development programmes.
“We wish to state emphatically that the sole objective and purpose for the creation of Oti Region is to bring about development to the people of the area,” Nana Mprah stressed.
The Chairman of the Oti Referendum Campaign Committee, Martin Akottey, on behalf of the committee, thanked the chiefs and the people for reposing confidence in them and pledged to do all within their power to set the agenda.
“We will take the campaign to every nook and cranny to ensure that the message goes down well with the people.
Mr. Akottey, who has Afrim Darko and Alhaji Dr. Inusah as his deputies, called on the people to rally behind them to overwhelmingly back the creation of the region.
