President Nana Akufo-Addo has stated that the record of his government in road infrastructure and the transportation network of the country is unparalleled.

According to him, no other government has done as much as his administration in terms of construction of roads, interchanges and bridges as well as rehabilitation of road networks and railway lines.
“Our record in road infrastructure and the transportation network of our country is unmatched,” he posted on a social media platform ‘X’, formerly Twitter.

From 2017 to 2022, the President stated that his administration has built 12 interchanges, six of which have been completed and six of which are still under construction, noting that this is a 140% increase compared to 2016.

President Akufo-Addo said between 2017 and 2022, his government invested GH¢16 billion in expanding and improving the country’s road network, including the construction of 33 bridges and the rehabilitation of 126km of existing railway lines.

On the development of new railway lines and roads, he stated that a 141.8km railway line was completed in 2023, as well as 615.8km of new roads across the country from 2017 to 2022.

According to him, this represents 4005.5% increase compared to 2009 to 2016 accumulated, adding that 11,974.96km roads constructed and rehabilitated from 2017 to 2022, representing 158.3% increase compared to 2009 to 2016 accumulated.

“186.40km roads reconstructed across the country from 2017-2022,” the President stated, adding that this represents a 521.3% increase over the number of kilometers accumulated between 2009 and 2016.

President Akufo-Addo indicated that the size of the country’s road network grew to 94,203.17km in 2022, a 20.15% growth over the 2009-2016 period.

He stated that the Department of Feeder Roads’ periodic maintenance of roads totaled 7,112.17km, representing a 340.93% increase compared to the 2009-2016 period.

According to him, the Ghana Highway Authority maintained 1,505.72 km of roads between 2017 and 2022, representing a 159.16% increase over the NDC government’s achievement from 2009 to 2016.

The Department of Urban Roads carried out maintenance of 3,357.1km of urban roads from 2017 to 2022, a 37.47% increase over the NDC government’s 2009–2016 total, whilst 1,187.11km roads (79.1% increase) were rehabilitated across the country within the same period.

President Akufo-Addo said a total of 6,094.50km graveling/re-graveling of road projects (655.3% increase) were also completed throughout the country.

He revealed that 101km of roads were resealed during the review period, while 163.56km of roads were partially reconstructed, reflecting a 57.5% drop compared to the NDC era from 2009 to 2016.

The President stated that 1,818.84km of road upgrading/surfacing (a 304.2% increase) was completed between 2017 and 2022, while 1,807.72km of asphalt overlay was completed, and that 44% of the road condition improved during this period.
