Parliament Approves C’ttee Membership Ratios

Parliament on Friday approved a formula based on an agreed ratio of 138:137 for the composition of membership of committees, parliamentary delegations, other parliamentary groups and associations and the membership of the Committee of Selection.

Per the agreed ratio of 138:137, the 19 membership of the Committee of Selection, excluding the chairperson who is the Speaker, works out with 10 members from the Majority Caucus and nine members from the Minority Caucus.

The Leadership of the House, pursuant to Orders 151 and 154 of the Standing Orders of Parliament, met on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, and determined the formula for composition of the membership of the Committee of Selection.

The Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, having commenced, needs to compose the membership of the committees, parliamentary groupings and associations for the effective discharge of the mandate of Parliament nationally and at the international level.

As provided in Standing Order 153, every Member of Parliament (MP) shall be appointed to at least a Standing Committee established by the House.

Article 103(5) of the 1992 Constitution, reinforced by Order 154, requires the composition of the committees to reflect the different shades of opinion in Parliament.

Accordingly, in the composition of the committees, groups, associations and delegations consideration of regional and gender balance among other relevant issues were taken into consideration and the Committee of Selection was composed with Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Chairman.

Majority Caucus

The 10 members from the Majority Caucus include Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Alexander Kwabena Afenyo-Markin, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Habib Iddrisu, Ambrose Dery, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Sarah Adwoa Safo, Philip Basoah and Bryan Acheampong.

Minority Caucus

Other members from the Minority Caucus include Haruna Iddrisu, James Klutse Avedzi, Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka, Collins Dauda, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, Cassiel Ato Forson, Laadi Aytii Ayamba, and Richard Acheampong.
