Police, Army Clash In Accra Central

Armed police officers and soldiers clashed at the Central Business District, Accra Central, as traders run for their lives.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred on Monday when a police officer was allegedly assaulted by some military officers.

The military officers were said to have given the police officer, who was riding a motorbike, some slaps for traffic infraction.

A source said the police officer pleaded that he is a Chief Inspector, but that did not save him from the soldiers.

“You are a police officer so what?” the soldiers are alleged to have said.

According to the source, the officer, after the assault, run to the Accra Central Police Station and informed his colleagues.

The armed police officers then followed him to the scene, overpowered the soldiers and arrested one of them.

The rest of the soldiers called for reinforcement. Upon arrival, the military men tried to get their colleague but the police resisted. This resulted in a confrontation.

Amateur videos on social media showed the soldiers initially shoving a supposed officer in plain clothes.

The man was slapped and punched from all angles while wearing a helmet.

This triggered fear on the streets of the Central Business District as traders and passersby ran for their lives.

Subsequent videos depict the armed soldiers in front of the Accra Central Police Station.

The officers then went out to clash with the soldiers.

Neither the Police nor the Armed Forces have issued a statement on the matter.
