Police Fire Tear Gas On Rampaging Students

Police officers in Kumasi stormed theĀ Islamic Senior High School atĀ Abrepo yesterday, firing tear gas in an effort to disperse rampaging students of the school who had blocked a road.

The non-lethal ammunition was fired at close range at the students, who were protesting over frequent knockdowns in front of the school.

Over 20 of them were rushed to the hospital following the incident.

They had allegedly blocked the Abrepo Junction-Barekese road during the protest.

The school authorities, unable to bring the situation under control, reportedly invited the police.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that a recent accident involving one of their teachers over the weekend triggered the protest.

The incident forced the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to race to Kumasi to get firsthand information and visit the victims.

The police, in a statement issued yesterday, said, ā€œThe Inspector-General of Police is proceeding to Kumasi for a first-hand assessment of the situation.ā€

ā€œThe police have commenced investigation into the incident,ā€ the statement added.
