Police Pickup Crashes Into Trotro At KNUST

The mangled commercial and police pick-up vehicles

A police pickup vehicle carrying about seven suspected cannabis smokers has crashed into a commercial vehicle (trotro) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) traffic light leading to Ayeduase in Kumasi, leaving several people injured.

The police vehicle, with registration number GP 1035, was reportedly transporting the suspects to the police station after they were arrested during an operation when the accident occurred.

According to eyewitnesses, the police pickup was travelling at high speed with its siren on as it approached the intersection.

The traffic light had reportedly turned green for the commercial vehicle, with registration number AS 37 55-22, when the police pickup entered the intersection, resulting in the collision.

Several persons, including some of the suspected cannabis smokers, police officers and passengers aboard the commercial vehicle, sustained injuries in the crash.

They were subsequently rushed to the KNUST Hospital for medical attention.

An eyewitness told DAILY GUIDE that one of the police officers sustained serious injuries and collapsed at the scene.

The officer was, however, quickly conveyed to the hospital by KNUST patrol vehicles for emergency treatment.

“One police officer sustained serious injuries and collapsed at the scene but was quickly picked up by the KNUST patrol cars to the hospital to save his life. No one died,” the eyewitness said.

The crash caused considerable traffic congestion on the KNUST campus, particularly around the traffic light.

Other police officers later arrived at the scene and cleared the damaged vehicles from the road, allowing traffic to flow normally.

The circumstances leading to the collision are expected to be investigated.
