Police Receive Drone, Cameras

The European Union through its Accountability, Rule of law and Anti-corruption Programme (ARAP), has donated a drone, cameras and other communication equipment valued â‚Ĵ40,000, to the Ghana Police Service.

The gadgets are intended to support the Public Affairs Department of the Police Service to communicate more effectively and efficiently with Ghanaians across the country.

Other items donated included a heavy duty video camcorder camera, Adobe premier Pro (image and video software), five laptops, printers, Samsung galaxy tablets and monitors among other things.

At a short ceremony to present the items, the Head of Cooperation and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Ghana, Zoltan Agai, said the European Union through ARAP has been supporting the Ghana Police Service in three critical areas.

“First we provide technical assistance to strengthen the Ghana police service for effective prosecution; we have focused on improving professional standards and strengthening accountability of the service to Ghanaians and supporting the directorate of the public affairs in strengthening accountability of the service to Ghanaians”

Adding her voice, Ana Sanchez, team leader of ARAP, in an address said citizens need to see the police as a responsible agent in charge of protecting and guaranteeing their rights.

“The police needs to see citizens as right bearers and clients to protect and support, and this was the rational for example to support the production of a set of dedicated episodes of the Ghana Police Watch, focusing on anti-corruption and ethics.

The Director General in charge of Services, Commissioner of Police Alex Amponsah Asiamah, who received the items on behalf of the Police administration, said ARAP has been the forefront in the transformation agenda of the Ghana Police Service.

He said ARAP supported in the review of the service instruction of the service, supporting the legal and prosecuting department to equip police prosecutors with the necessary tools to ensure that all citizens have access to fair trials and now supporting the public affairs department.

He thanked ARAP and pledged that he would ensure that equipment donated are properly maintained.
