Police ‘Robber’ Arrested

The police in Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana municipality of the Upper East Region are still searching for some seven men believed to be part of a gang that went on robbery spree in the early hours of last Friday.

One other person, whom the robbery victims described as a man wearing a dark uniform and fled from the robbery scene on a motorbike, has been arrested and remanded in prison custody by a court in Navrongo.

He has been identified as a police officer called Lance Corporal Ndebugri Asaah, with service number 48430, and stationed at the Chiana Police Station in the Kassena-Nankana West District in the region.

The robbers attacked their victims with guns and managed to take away a number of mobile phones and unspecified cash before the police patrol team got to the scene close to the Notre-Dame Senior High School and Junior Seminary.

This is the second time a robbery attack has occurred at the same venue in almost two years.

According to the Upper East Regional Police P.R.O ASP David Fianko-Okyere, the police officer has denied being a member of the robbery gang, claiming that he was also a victim of the incident.

He said the police are doing a thorough investigation into what makes the Notre-Dame area suitable for robbers to operate, considering the fact that there are schools and many houses around and also the place is open with very few hiding places along the road.

“These criminals who rob people on the road and even enter people’s home do a lot of surveillance and gather information gradually and people see them and yet no one reports them to the police, only for them to finish with their operations before the police are called in.

“If you call the police and we even come and monitor their activities on the quiet and question them, and they happen not to be criminals, they will be careful and will send information to others that the police are watching. We need the public to talk; they need to be very vigilant and use the police number we have given out. This is how the public can help the police to protect lives and property,” he added.
