A TOTAL of 1,736 vehicles, which were illegally using sirens and strobe lights on the roads, have been seized in the Ashanti Region, the police has announced.
The move forms part of the Ghana Police Service’s major operations to crack down on the use of unauthorised sirens and strobe lights, which is lately rampant on the roads.
This information was announced by ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, the Director in charge of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
Addressing media practitioners in Kumasi, ACP Obeng indicated that the sirens and strobe lights were instantly removed from the seized vehicles by police.
According to him, the Ghana Police Service is aware that some recalcitrant drivers were illegally using sirens and strobe lights on the roads, hence their decision to stop the practice.
ACP Obeng disclosed that the crackdown on the illegal use of sirens and strobe lights by drivers and vehicle owners was being done across the country by police.
“As of August 10, 2026, the police has intercepted 11,292 vehicles across all 25 police regions,” the police officer announced, adding that the operation is still ongoing.
He said the nationwide crackdown on unauthorised sirens and strobe lights started about one-and-half-month ago, and the exercise is aimed at ensuring decency on the roads.
ACP Obeng cautioned drivers and vehicle owners who have illegally installed sirens and strobe lights in their vehicles to voluntarily remove them immediately.
“People with sirens and strobe lights in their vehicles, it’s unlawful act so remove them yourself to avert having issues with the police,” the police officer warned drivers.
