Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, founder of the Danquah Institute, has advised Kantanka Automobile Company Limited to ensure the mass production of small cars which many Ghanaians can afford.

Mr Otchere-Darko indicated that “I own a Kantanka Mensah; it drives just like any other car in its range and I love it, my only issue with the manufacturer is that they should be looking more at building mass-produced vehicles which many Ghanaians can afford like the small cars now used for Uber in Accra.”

In his view, “Kantanka can be the model for taxis in Ghana if only the manufacturer can target the $8,000 to $12,000 market.”

“Keep it basic- A/C, radio, no frills,” he added.

His comments follow a debate about plans by German carmaker Volkswagen to put up a plant in Ghana by the middle of 2019 and what the move portends for the local car manufacturer.

On Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and a large business delegation travelled to Accra to strengthen her country’s economic ties with Ghana as part of her three-nation tour of Africa.

Germany and Ghana signed three MoUs, including one for the establishment of a Volkswagen assembling plant in Ghana.

Mr Schäfer and Alan Kyerematen, Minister of Trade and Industry initialed on behalf of the German automobile manufacturer and government respectively.
