The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) Ghana, has joined the global commemoration of the International Women’s Day (IWD) with a call for equal opportunities for women on the job market.
In a statement issued prior to the IWD celebration on March 8, the ICU said, “This requires a commitment to fair hiring practices, including non-discrimination in recruitment and selection processes.”
The statement, signed by ICU Head, Gender and Youth Desk, Esinam Afua Poku, also called for the promotion of a safe work environment by organisations.
It said this can be done through the implementation of policies and procedures that promote a safe work culture free from harassment and discrimination.
“Women need to feel safe and supported in their workplace. Organizations should create the atmosphere that prohibits violence and harassment by providing training to all employees on how to recognize and prevent these behaviors,” it added.
The International Women’s Day is commemorated on March, 8 each year to appreciate the remarkable achievement of women the world over and recognise the ongoing struggles to attain gender equality.
The 2024 celebration is on the theme “Count Her In: Invest in Women”.
The ICU used the occasion to celebrate and encourage women to surge on in the struggle towards the socio-economic advancement of nations, especially the developing countries.
“We take inspiration from the theme as women, and continue to make conscious efforts to uplift ourselves for inclusion in the social, economic, cultural, and political scheme of things.
Further, we need not look down on our effort to invest in ourselves, but rather raise the bar and continue to scale up our contribution for recognition, respect, dignity, and equality,” the statement said.
