Pythons Take Over Kumasi ECG Substation

Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has restored power to parts of Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, after an unusual incident involving pythons disrupted operations at a substation at Ahodwo.

The power outage, which affected residents along the Ahodwo–Daban–Dr. Asafo Adjei Road, occurred on Wednesday, April 22, following a fault on a distribution feeder.

A statement issued by ECG on Monday, April 27, indicated that engineers from the Ahinsan District were immediately dispatched to the area to rectify the problem.

The team managed to restore electricity supply to some affected areas, but customers around Cocoa Depot and the Star Sawmill enclave remained without power due to a persistent fault.

The situation took a dramatic turn when engineers, in the process of replacing a faulty fuse at a nearby transformer, encountered a python within the substation, making access to the facility difficult.

Ahinsan District Engineer, Ing. Kwaku Appiah, explained that the reptile had taken refuge in the installation, thereby posing a risk to the engineers.

Attempts by residents to remove the snake proved unsuccessful, as it crawled beneath the substation structure.

However, the engineers took advantage of a brief window to carry out the necessary repairs and successfully restored power to the remaining affected customers.

The incident was later reported to the Kumasi Zoo, where officials upon arrival discovered two pythons and eggs believed to have been laid at the site. The reptiles were subsequently captured later in the evening.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti West Regional General Manager of ECG, Ing. George Amoah, has advised the public to report power outages through the company’s official communication channels for prompt attention.
