Road Tolls Coming Back … Govt Eats Humble Pie

Government is taking steps to reintroduce the collection of road tolls on some selected roads in the country very soon.

This follows a letter written by the Finance Ministry under the hand of the sector minister, Ken Ofori-Atta conveying the proposed rate for an input by the Ministry of Roads and Highways to enable the Finance Ministry complete the schedule of fees under the impending Legislative Instrument.

The ministry is also considering to either include or exclude MDAs in the payment of tolls or adjust the fees and charges collected by MDAs for their services through Legislative Instrument when necessary.

Its is also seeking to identify the roads and highways to be affected by the reintroduction of the tolls.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta in the 2023 budget statement to Parliament raised the reintroduction of the road toll which he said is one of the revenue measures.

“The fiscal policy measures to underpin the 2023 Budget for consideration and approval by Parliament include the reintroduction of tolls on selected public roads and highways with a renewed focus on leveraging technology in the collection to address the inefficiencies characterized by the previous toll collection regime,” paragraph 462 of the 2023 Budget statement reads.
