Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal career could be heading towards an unexpected end after the forward walked out of the squad following a disagreement with new head coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo, 41, became frustrated after being made to warm up but not introduced during Portugal’s Nations League clash with Norway.
He subsequently left the squad after learning he would not start against Denmark.
The Al-Nassr forward has scored a record 146 goals and earned a world-record 234 caps for Portugal.
Jesus has insisted Ronaldo would be welcome back, with discussions involving the player, his representatives and the Portuguese Football Federation ongoing as they seek a solution.
However, the dispute has raised questions over whether Ronaldo’s international career could be nearing an unexpected end.
His supporters have backed him on social media while criticising Jesus, although some Portugal fans and sections of the media have accused the veteran forward of selfish behaviour.
With Portugal’s next match against Denmark scheduled for November, Ronaldo now faces a major decision over his international future.
