The Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly has been elected onto the Pan African Council of REFELA for 2019-2021 during the last General Assembly of REFELA which took place on 22nd November, 2018, in the framework of the 2018 African Summit in Marrakesh, Morocco.

REFELA was launched in Tangiers, Morocco, in 2011. It is managed by an executive bureau that includes members representing the five regions of Africa.

It has national chapters that are called to be the Gender Equality Committee of the national associations of local and sub-national governments in each African country similar to the National Association of Local Authorities (NALAG).

RAFELA is an integral part of United Cities and Local Government of Africa (UCLGA).

The Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Madam Iddrisu Mariam, told DAILY GUIDE that she is currently working on plans and programmes to meet her five most important mandates in Ghana.

She disclosed that she is mandated to establish RAFELA – Ghana Chapter. The MCE hinted that she would be working closely with the Ministry of Gender,  Children and Social Protection,  the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development,  First Lady of the Republic of Ghana and NGOs working in the area of Women Empowerment and Child Protection to work towards the promotion and implementation of  the four main campaigns in Ghana.

“I have started building a database on all female MMDCEs and assembly women, both elected and appointed in Ghana because they form the membership of RAFELA,” she disclosed.

She said she has already appointed RAFELA regional representatives, adding “we are now working on a date for the inauguration of RAFELA-Ghana Chapter by United Cities and Local Government of Africa (UCLGA)”.
