Military and police presence has been beefed up at Sambu and Zogbei in the Mion District of the Northern Region after a clash over a land dispute.
Exchange of gunfire between the Sambu and Zogbei communities over a land dispute resulted in the death of one person, with several persons injured.
Information gathered indicates that a land was allocated to an organisation for developmental purposes, and that when the organisation visited the land to clear and start working on it, residents of Zogbei resisted the attempt by the organisation to develop the land, saying that they use it for farming activities.
The situation created some confusion, which resulted in the two communities clashing over the land.
The Northern Regional Minister, who doubles as the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Shani Alhassan Shaibu, led a delegation to the Mion Regent’s palace and called on the people of Sambu and Zogbei communities to give peace a chance.
He urged the youth to desist from misusing social media, which is believed to have caused the clash.
“The young men and women who are always on the phone saying things that do not exist should desist from that because it will only cause fear and panic,” he said.
He assured the Mionlana and his elders that his office will support them to ensure that they dialogue and find lasting solutions to the matter.
The Chairman of REGSEC assured the people of the Mion District that they will do very thing within their power to ensure that the district is peaceful and back to normalcy.
