National Security Coordinator, Mr. Edward Asomani, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lt Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and Director General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Mr. Nana Attobrah Quaicoe, embarked on a working tour at the newly constructed Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Sandema in the Builsa North District of the Upper East Region, on May 9, 2024, to assess the progress of work.

Strategically positioned in the Builsa North District, the FOB serves a vital role in enhancing our military preparedness against terrorism and chieftaincy-related threats, DAILY GUIDE has learnt.

The FOB, according to a source, is  designed to support  tactical operations, streamline logistical, communications, human, and intelligence functions, and minimise response time in the Upper East Region. In essence, the FOB serves as a command centre and staging area for military personnel and equipment, and reinforces our defence capabilities in the area, the source added.

Given Sandema’s proximity to Burkina Faso, a nation grappling with escalating acts of terrorism and political instability, the Builsa North District faces the risk of terrorism spillover without intervention.

It is a fact that the region has a history of violent chieftaincy clashes, notably the Bawku issue. Against this backdrop, the establishment of the FOB is paramount in bolstering Ghana’s ability to address both internal and external security threats.

During a sidelined discussion with the media and security personnel, Mr. Asomani reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and advocated for similar installations along strategic border locations.

He commended the CDS for his diligent oversight and applauded the contractor for completing the project in a timely manner.

Similarly, Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah expressed gratitude to the Minister for National Security and the National Security Coordinator for supporting GAF projects.

He noted the high morale among the personnel in the area and emphasised GAF’s commitment to utilising the base effectively by deploying well-trained personnel and logistics to bolster security efforts in the region.

He underscored his dedication to implementing measures aimed at safeguarding our national territorial integrity.
