Social Media Week Kicks Off

The global media and marketing platform, Social Media Week, has begun in Accra with various activities at the Accra Mall.

The launch event drew over 300 people in attendance, industry leaders, agency heads, among media personnel.

The week-long event dubbed ‘Accra Is Connected’ which will take place at the Accra Mall till September 15 will host speakers from academia, corporate Ghana, media, among other areas.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EchoHouse, Beryl Agyekum, speaking about the importance of the internet and why the agency decided to organise such an event, pointed out that “the internet has created 1000s of virtual shops that have no physical location, no physical stock, but huge purchase traffic.

“Today, when you put out content, your audience is the world. This week, Social Media Week is affording us the opportunity to change the narrative of ‘My Employer Could Be On Your Timeline, RT,” she mentioned.

Vodafone Ghana CEO Yolanda Cuba spoke? on the ‘Get 1000 Businesses Online’ initiative that seeks to introduce 1,000 informal businesses to social media.

She said Vodafone was embarking on a market storm in partnership with Facebook and Google Skills Partner (Wineloya Digital), where volunteers will move from market to market to help and make social media friendlier to market women.

“Volunteers will hit major markets such as Makola, Circle, Madina and Abossey-Okai and set up Facebook accounts for business owners and Google will create a directory for the businesses. Social media opens up the market beyond physical location for all businesses. Ghanaian businesses have a lot to benefit from,” she said.

Steered by Anita Erskine, the event had marketing manager of the Accra Mall, Denise Asare, the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei-Sowah and a representative from the Communication Ministry share why their various outfits support the Social Media Week.
