South Africa Faces Deadly Riots As Court Hears Zuma Case

There are ongoing deadly riots in South Africa.

The riots are taking place as former President Jacob Zuma – who has been jailed for 15 months over contempt – challenges his sentence at a hearing in South Africa’s top court.

Local television reports showed people looting shops and setting fire to buildings.

The riots started last week when Mr Zuma handed himself over to police to begin a 15-month sentence.

Several people have been killed and dozens arrested.

Mr Zuma had been convicted of contempt of court after failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency. He denied corruption charges against his administration.

Videos showed people rushing to loot a shopping center in Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.

Media reports say six people have been killed in the riots and over 200 arrested since the unrest began.
