Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has donated GH¢100,000 to victims of the humanitarian crisis that has struck many towns and villages along the Lower Volta River enclave.
Following the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, towns and communities in 11 constituencies in the Eastern and Volta regions have been flooded.
The constituencies are Asuogyaman, Anlo, Keta, Ketu North, Ketu South, Kpando, North Dayi, South Dayi, Central Tongu, North Tongu, and South Tongu.
On behalf of Speaker Bagbin, Chief of Staff at the Office of the Speaker, Kofi Ator, presented a cash donation of GH¢100,000 to Wisdom Kobena Woyome, MP for South Tongu, at a community durbar in Sogakope on Friday, October 20, 2023.
The money is meant for purchase of relief items for the victims in all the affected areas, he stated.
Mr. Ator explained that Speaker Bagbin, who had travelled outside the country, was touched by the plight of the victims and decided to give his widow’s mite.
“He says he stands with you in your time of tribulation and suffering. He acknowledges this may not be enough but his widow’s mite,” Mr. Ator said.
He intimated that Mr. Bagbin wanted the people to know that the struggles they faced now, did not define their future, adding, “We can get through this together.”
There were other donations of food items from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) which were presented by the Minority Leader, Dr. Ato Forson.
