St. Peter’s Floors Adisco In NMSQ

2018 NSMQ champions, St. Peter’s SHS poses with the trophy

St. Peter’s Senior High School yesterday emerged winners of the 25th National Science and Math Quiz competition.

The competition, which saw one time winners, Adisadel College (ADISCO), two times winners, St. Peter’s Senior High School (PERSCO) and first time finalist, West African Senior High School (WASS), commenced on a dull note.

The much anticipated grand finale of the national quiz gained momentum as Adisadel College took the lead for the first two rounds but threw away their chances after the 4th round with debutant finalist, West African Senior High School coming in stronger to take the lead.

St. Peter’s rose to the occasion in the game at the closing round of the contest by winning two out of the four riddles to accumulate 45 points as against 44 and 39 for WASS and ADISCO respectively.

This year’s edition marked ADISCO’s 4th consecutive appearance at the grand finale of the competition within which they emerged winners in 2016.

St. Peter’s SHS walked away with GH¢40,000 and assorted prizes as winners of the competition, with GH¢15,000 as prize money for the contestants.

First runners up, WASS also took home an amount of GH¢30, 000 and GH¢10, 000 for the contestants.

ADISCO, who emerged second runners up, bagged in GH¢20,000 and GH¢5,000 for the contestants.

A Deputy Minister of Education, Barbara Ayisi Asher, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Education, commended the organizers and all contestants for their showmanship.

She urged various organizations and stakeholders to assist in the quest to unearth hidden talents in the science and technology field of the country’s education.

The Deputy Minister also pledged that her ministry would support science, mathematics and technical education at all levels of education to speed up national development.

This year’s trophy for St. Peter’s SHS is their first after winning it in 2000 and 2005.

This year’s competition was expanded into a festival to include other satellite programmes: Mentorship Sessions, Sci-Tech Fair, Picnic and tours to encourage interactions including  practical study and application of Science and Mathematics.
