Sister Derby
Musician Sister Derby has called for an end to the growing practice of releasing balloons into the sky during funerals and vigils in Ghana.
In a post on X on September 27, 2026, she raised concerns about the environmental impact of the practice.
Sister Derby said releasing about 50 to 100 balloons during funeral ceremonies could contribute to plastic waste and other environmental problems.
“Like seriously? Where do we think they end up? Is it necessary?” she asked.
She also questioned the source of the plastic waste often highlighted by environmental group Bus Stop Boys.
“So all the plastics/rubbers/rubbish the @buzstopboys dey show we nu, you think it’s from who?” she wrote.
