Sunyani East NPP Supporters Make Appeal

SOME SUPPORTERS of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Sunyani East have appealed to the National Executive Committee (NEC) to ensure that the upcoming electoral areas and coordinators elections are free, fair and transparent, to help reorganise the party.

At a press conference Monday to register their concerns, a group calling itself ‘Coalition of Concerned Citizens of NPP Supporters in Sunyani East’, pleaded for the reconstitution of the election committee in the constituency to avoid biases against prospective candidates who wish to contest the incumbent Member of Parliament, Kwesi Ameyaw Cheremeh, and other positions.

The group, therefore, called on the NEC to make a timely intervention to avoid any chaos or court action in the constituency.

Moses Osei Tutu, Atuansey Polling Station Chairman, for example, said some members of the party in the constituency had reservations about the appointment of the MCE of Sunyani, as the chairman of the committee.

“This is due to some alleged comments purported to have been made by the MCE on a radio station that since he (MCE) was supported by the MP during his appointment and endorsement by the MP to become the chief executive, he would do everything in his power as the election committee chairman to favour him (Kwesi Ameyaw Cheremeh) to retain the seat as the Member of Parliament for the constituency,” he explained.

Mr. Tutu further alleged that the MP already has a slot on the election committee and so if the MCE is allowed to remain on the committee, the MP alone will have double slots on the committee, which is against the election rules of the party.

He said as of now, nomination forms are not available in the constituency, even though the elections are billed to take place from February 28 to March 5, this year.

The group, therefore, appealed to the NEC to provide a clear timetable to be pasted at vantage points for the conduct of the elections, to avoid manipulation and any attempts to rig the process by unscrupulous fellows.
