Sunyani Queen Mother Passes On

The late Nana Yaa Nyamaa II

QUEEN MOTHER of Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Yaa Nyamaa Puduo II, has passed on at the Sunyani Regional Hospital after a protracted illness.

The death of the late queen was announced at a press conference by the Dwantoah Hemaa of the traditional area, Nana Aboah Boahemaa.

Known as Helena Akosua Yeboah in her private life; she died on August 1, aged 64. She left behind four children.

Nana Yaa Nyamaa popularly known by residents as Abrewa-tia was born on 4th April 1955 and was enstooled at the young age of 17. She comes from the royal family of Boahene Korkor in Sunyani.

Per tradition, Sumakwahene  of Atonie, a suburb of Sunyani, Nana Abosom Apraku, officially announced the death of the queen mother to the paramount chief of the traditional council Nana Asor Nkrawire II – sitting in state amidst firing of musketry, wailing and crying.

He informed the chief that a one week celebration would be observed in October 2019.

‘Preparations are underway for final internment of our beloved mother’ in a solemn dirge followed by the talking drum.

She was regarded as fighting for equal opportunities for both boys and girls and was an environment activist.

In 2017 she led a campaign dubbed ‘Keep Sunyani Clean’ in which she provided wastes bins at vantage points within the municipality.
